Theo Pangraz

english barrister, german advocate, international mediator

International Mediator

“I instructed Theo on a 1/2 day Mediation. Theo's mediation approach was excellent; indeed, he went above and beyond to facilitate a settlement.”

“I used Theo as mediator in a recent case. Despite only having four hours in which to broker a deal, he managed it. I was very impressed by his tenacity in the face of two parties who both threatened to walk away. I would recommend Theo for his strategic, commerical thinking and his determination to get a result for all parties involved."

 Qualifications and experience

With more than 17 years’ legal experience, Theo worked in-house (as General Counsel, Head of Legal and Insurance, and Managing Director) in an international company in the oil and chemical industry for 15 years.

This gave him a deep understanding and thorough knowledge of the mechanics of business, commercial negotiations and contractual details. He worked hands-on on many international projects in Europe, South America, Middle East and Asia, with long-term assignments to India, Singapore, China and Indonesia.

Having trained at the London School of Mediation, Theo has worked as a mediator since 2005 and is a member of the Civil Mediation Council. He registered with Clerksroom in 2007.

Theo says:

“The secret to being a successful mediator is being well-prepared, a good listener and persistent in trying to help parties to find a solution for their dispute, even during those times when they want to give up.

I pride myself on working well with people of all ages and backgrounds, cultures and religions, able to communicate clearly what may sometimes be complex ideas and information in jargon-free language.

Instead of feeling the need to instruct, as some lawyers do, I prefer to listen, taking in all information and filtering through it to pick out those aspects that are relevant and useful to the particular situation, which will ultimately lead us to bridge the gap and reach a successful conclusion.

I’m at ease with business and figures and am totally flexible on times and places of mediation: whatever suits my clients. Also, despite being a German, I can laugh!

I love my job and must confess to being a bit of a workaholic. I want to provide the best outcome for my clients, and that means reading the papers thoroughly, thinking the arguments through, researching background and law – basically, being prepared and on top of things.

It is hugely satisfying to me to see people reaching a solution in their disputes and being able to move on in their lives and/or businesses.”

Outside the office

“I am married with two teenage daughters.

I am also clerk to the Governors of Wellington School and give lessons in commercial law at the University of Exeter.

In my spare time (what little there is!) I go to the gym (to try to get back into shape) and go walking.”

 Recent feedback

"Dear Theo: Well done on yesterday – another one settled, and thank you for all your hard labour!"

“As an observer, I attended a mediation with Theo, who was first class, highly personable, hands-on, pragmatic and energetic, with a great sense of humour. His rapport building was superb. He also took time out to discuss the case and tactics with me, which was great.”
